Is the float level switch a reliable water level measurement method?

The float type liquid level sensor is a common liquid level sensor. Because it is simple to use and inexpensive, it is popular and widely used. But do you know the shortcomings of the float level sensor?

1) Cumbersome assembly process, increase labor costs

The float type level switch has a large volume, a loose structure, a large space required for installation. The installation way is complicated, which inevitably increases the installation cost.


2) Easy to accumulate scale, not easy to clean


The float type level switch is prone to dirt after a period of use. It is not easy to clean thoroughly because of its loose structure. Therefore, the float type level switch is not suitable for use in food machinery because this type level sensor does not meet the food hygiene certification standards.


3) Low precision and Low reliability


The float type liquid level gauge uses the buoyancy principle of the liquid to the magnetic float ball. The displacement amount of the magnetic float ball with the liquid level change is converted into an analog linear signal output. The liquid level control accuracy is not high, and it is susceptible to water level, scale, debris, weather, and the like. The float has a magnet inside, and the magnet will absorb the impurities in the water, and will form scale after a long time. Scale can cause the float to gain weight, which can affect the accuracy of the water level detection.

Due to its structure and working principle, the float-type level switch not only has low liquid level control accuracy, but also has extremely low reliability.


The capacitive liquid level sensor has the characteristics of small size and convenient installation. The biggest advantage of the capacitive liquid level sensor is that it can be directly attached to the outer wall of the container to detect the liquid level. It is a non-contact type detect and can therefore be used to detect edible liquids such as drinking water and beverages. Capacitive liquid level sensors have restrictions on the wall thickness of the container, and the material of the container must be non-metallic.
